Research Note: Jazz, Radio, Modernism

"The position of African Americans in both [Stein's] Brewsie and Willie and American wartime radio reinforces the importance of attending to the form of expressive programs. As content, African American culture and questions of race were not considered outside the purview of radio. A large part of radio's success could be attributed to its popular jazz programming."

Sarah Wilson. "Gertrude Stein and the Radio," Modernism/Modernity, Volume 11, Number 2, April 2004, page 272.

"The Scientific Method" will present "Robert Johnson: The Centennial Celebration" on Wednesday, May 11, at 9:00 a.m. (CST) on 90.3 FM KWUR.com.

In this one-hour radio special, you'll hear of the man and the times in which he lived, the myth of his "deal with the devil" at the crossroads, and the music he created through interviews with Stephen Johnson, Robert Johnson' grandson and vice president of the Robert Johnson Blues Foundation, musicians Corey Harris and Warren Haynes, and writers Peter Guralnick and Scott Barretta.
